Welcome

Image of Jame MeikleThe James Meikle Shrewsbury Scholarship was established in January 2005 at the instigation of James and his family. James Meikle was a Civil and Structural Engineer educated at Rathkeale College in the Wairarapa and later at Canterbury University, Christchurch. James spent his gap year as an 18 year old at Shrewsbury School in Shropshire, England. He worked as an Engineer in both New Zealand and in the UK and traveled extensively until, at age 33, he sadly passed away from a brain tumour after a very courageous battle.

James’s wish was to leave a legacy whereby a student from either Rathkeale College or Christ’s College (where James was a tutor also) could experience a gap year at Shrewsbury School with financial assistance from the Scholarship to provide airfares, travel insurance and a clothing allowance.

Students who are interested in applying for the Scholarship should express an interest to their schools early in the school year. Interviews are then held with the Trustees of the Scholarship and the chosen candidate will travel to the UK to take up their position at the start of the school term in January of the following year.
